Summer 2012 Looks Good for Snowy Owls

This coming summer looks good for Snowy Owls at Arctic Watch. They are easier to spot on the tundra. When we arrive in early summer, they are just fuzzy balls, a few weeks later they metamorphosed into beautiful white birds. The snowy owl population around Arctic Watch is closley linked to the lemming population. If there are lots of lemmings, then there are lots of snow owls. The summer of 2010 was a low year for lemmings on Somerset island. We anticipate that by 2012 the lemming population will be on the increase. At the same time, the overall population of snowy owls appears to have experienced a huge increase. (see link)

We hope this means lots of owls at Arctic Watch!
